Getting your NIE is not only a suggestion, it is a strong recommendation I have to do. Most of the times you get involved with Spanish Law and, especially, Spanish Tax Law and you do not know what is the NIE.
NIE is a Spanish Official Number which gives to you identification in order to act with tax purposes. You NEED this ID number to identify yourselves and you will not be able to sign any public document or deed in a Notary if you do not have this number. Besides, you need this ID number to pay taxes and have the deed registered in the Land Registry.
There are different ways to get this number: you can do it personally, attending to any Spanish Consulate or Embassy out of Spain, they will take your application and send it to Madrid, where the procedure will conclude when you receive the document in the address you appointed in your application form.
You can do this same application in Spain, in the Police Station closer to your residence (house or hotel) -this option is faster, as you are in Spain and the application will be solved in that same Police Station-.
Unfortunately, there is no way someone (any representative) carries out this procedure on your behalf after you give her or her a power of attorney. You, in person, must do this claim.
However, in the event you need urgently the NIE -very few cases accepted (i.e. immediate purchasing deed signing, given clear evidence you are in this situation)- you can try to have it by a solicitor or representative in the relevant Spanish Tax Authority Office.
